Recently i have noticed sweat patches on my boy. His been out of work for about a month now and hasnt been clipped. It seems to be happening when his lying down. Could this be he is too hot in his stable or something worth havding a chat to the vet about?

Big woolly coat? Warmish weather? In the stable? Sounds like he has prepared for a cold winter and then the weather changed it's mind. If he's anything like my Ari, he sometimes has sweaty armpits when he's been lying down in the stable. Where are the patches? Usual sweaty places for horses or has your lad perhaps been lying in his own wee? - again another Ari trick.

If you are concerned ring the vet, but he sounds like he might just be too woolly for the weather.

Well, I don't clip because mine are outside in all weathers during the day and I don't rug them. They are only in at night and doing very little work at the moment. You will have to decide what is best for your circumstances/workload/turnout etc.

Sounds like he is just a bit warm. Murphy has also been sweating quite a bit - he goes to great lengths to grow a fantastic winter coat (started in August.... he likes to be prepared) so when the weather got a bit warmer he was suddenly too hot. He is out 24/7 without a rug, but we did consider clipping him so he got less hot although never actually got around to doing it.
