hes gone from 1 to 2 prascend a day, over 2 months.... hes being weird, fine in the mornings when i turn out then bring him in about 2pm, feed. then back up about 6.30-7pm.. he runs to the back of his stable and i cant get near him...phoned vet he said its a side affect from the tablets..so go back to giving him half and build back up to 2 over 4 days.... he had 1 this morning, hes very sweaty has been for a week or so, not rugged, hes soaking from his front legs forward also his tummy, his back end is fairly cool... is this another side affect from the tablets?...

Going from 1 to 2 tablets is quite a jump. Would he be better on 1.5 tablets?

One of the symptoms of cushings is the inability to control body temperature, hence the sweating, but it seems strange that this should get worse on medication.

Hope you can get it sorted out.

he started on 1 a day a year ago... he had 1/2 day before yesterday the 1 today the 1.5 tomorrow then 2 saturday... yes he does seem to be getting worse..:( hes being tested again on the 21 november...i should say he was on 1 1/2 for a month, his leavels went upto 138 with in a month so went upto 2 a day... before that he was on 1 a day his levels were 76...hence why we went upto 1 1/2 a day...

My pony has only recently started cushings medication but we had to build it up slowly as she seemed to become jaded and off her food when we started on full dose.
She also sweats very easily, 5mins in the horsebox and she was dripping. She is in light work so different to yours but I have given her a blanket clip and she has been heaps better. I would rather be rugging her than sponging her off and dealing with skin irritations.

You can get hung up on what other people think about your treatment of your horse, but at the end of the day you generally know your horse better than anyone and your instincts are usually correct.

ps forgot to say that even if you find that your horse isn't happy clipped, his coat will grow back in a few weeks!

I just gave her a blanket as I don't clip for the pretty patterns I clip dependent upon which areas get the sweatiest. Her problem areas were her neck, elbows, stifle and tummy so a blanket was ideal for me, however she did have a bib clip firstly a few weeks ago which was fine for then.
You can always take a bit off and if that's not enough take some more off.

thankyou.... hes sweating in the same places as yours.plus between his back legs....from just standing in his stable...so i may just do a blanket clip... when clippers come..putting his shoes back on next week so hopefully get him out a couple of times a week..

I had to clip my old mare a few years ago as she has cushings and was very hairy and was sweating very badly. I hunter clipped her to get rid of the hair. In the mean time we got her medication sorted out and it has never regrown so hairy again and we have had no further problems with sweating.

Little Fuzzy was clipped last winter for the 1st time in her life - made her cushings SO much more bearable. She was 28 & had been retired from ridden riding for nearly a year.
Took off only a wide gullet, between her front legs & then the whole belly off - she was so much more comfy & it really reduced the sweating.
I didnt rug either, there was enough thatch on the top to be a 400g+ rug!

Hope you resolve this, but I'd strongly advise to clip on humane grounds.

i will be clipping as i want to bring him into work again.. well plodding around the lanes.. :D

Hi, I have the exact same problem as you at the minute. Mine is a retired shetty, 21 years old. She has been sweating for around two months now. I am going to give her a clip, as I did last year. No particular pattern but under neck, belly and under back legs. I then use a summer weight rug just to keep her back dry as she is also arthritic in the stifle. For my own peace of mind I feel it keeps her joints dry. It is the worst time of year for cushings so it's expected to cause problems. I have decided not to keep upping her medication, 1 prascend and 10 metformin a day, but she does very well with a clip over the winter.

been up to him tonight and its almost like hes had a bath hes that wet.. i put a lite cotton sheet on him to soak it up a bit...

TM, sadly i lost my shetland to cushings two years ago now but i also have a another cushings horse, she's 29 and really only shown problems the last 12 months, i clip her to help with the sweating, it means she can control her temp better and if it gets colder you can then keep warm with rugs, she even wears neck covers in the worst of the weather.

the sweating will not help with general wellness due to loosing so much electrolytes so makes them feel really awful and also doesnt do their skin any good either, one of the biggest issues with cushings is the reduced immune system protection and skin conditions can take hold if you cant keep the horses skin well maintained. its easier to keep the skin clean and groomed if the hair is shorter.

dont worry what others on your yard are or are not saying, its what you feel is best for your pony that counts and if you feel he is happy and well that is all that matters. just a thought have you tried him on herbal remidies as well as the pracend? Vitex Agnus works well in combination or on its own with cushings, best of luck and hope you boy settles quickly.

Personally I'd clip. My old boy had cushings and his coat did some really weird things, like casting his winter coat in the middle of January, and then he'd start growing winter hairs round about mid-June! Bless him.

If yours is getting sweaty and staying wet, then I'd definately clip, then rug. You could then always put on a cotton waffle underneath whatever stable rug you put on, in case he does sweat and it will draw it out.

But yes, deffo clip.

clip him my mum did it with her pony and shes not being ridden.
we just keep clipping every 4 months to keep her coat to a good length and not over hairy and the winters coming in so its clipping time next month and nice warm rugs over the winter.

My mare has been better since having a blanket clip but she is still sweating a lot when exercised - she has always been very excitable, but contemplating taking it to a hunter clip. She has tonnes of rugs so that's not a problem, but I she's in her 20's and never been bare!
