Has anyone else got a shetland thats sweaty at the moment??
Tilly has got her full winter coat and is stabled at night, out during the day, when i come down in the mornings she so sweaty all over - she's all curly...
ive also noticed that she doesnt like me touching her tummy any more, but if i press harder and scratch her tummy she likes it... she's been sweaty since beginning december but comes from field fine.. do you think shes just over heating or do you think its something more sinister?? she eats well and has never been off her feed, she isnt particularly over weight either, she had baileys lo-cal balancer, dengie good doer, mint supplement and a bit of linseed oil. twice a day. she isnt worked at the mo although she's driven twice aweek in summer. over the summer her dropping started to get harder and longer and not fallin apart so i increased her hay, in the summer, and now ive introduced kwick beet to her diet which has helped her alot, her feed is also wetted down to mush to increase her water intake... any ideas???

How old is your Shetland??.Is it drinking normally,Peeing normally??.It has been very mild alot of unclipped horses are getting hot. It's inbetween for the clipped horses,1 rug is not enough and 2 rugs are to much.We just can't win.

Hi
I have a shettie that gets sweaty in winter. I give him a bib and belly clip and have never needed to rug him. As long as he's eating/drinking normally I wouldn't worry.

Both mine are sweaty too. remember they have a big double coat, clipping her belly or a bib should help. Mine get especially sweaty when it snows!

Thanks for that, shes on a livery yard and shes the only shetland so i have no one to ask... never had this problem before but i suppose we are having a particulary mild winter. thanks everyone.. Do you think i should be concerned about her belly and reluctance for it to be touched?

Yeah, just see how she is after a clip. We had to clip my veteran sheltie over the summer because she doesnt lose her coat as much as she used to and she was way too hot. She loved being clipped, shetlands are so itchy they seem to go nuts for vibrating blades to take all their itchy hair off....!

We have three shetlands and two of them have neck and belly clips around end of Sep, when they start to sweat in thier stable overnight, they never have turnout rugs on as would still get too hot. Bubb's who suffers sweet itch is clipped out in September, he does have a rug on until coat has grown back, like now, but ill soon be being clipped again. It has been very mild this year so i thing you will find a difference once she has had her clip.
