Everybody, meet Nordic Spirit. 22 year old TB who turned out to be a little lack lustre in the racing department but the horse of a lifetime to my friend. She has asked that I do a memorial thread to him so that people everyone can know how wonderful he was and how much she loved him. Sadly after an accident in the field yesterday Nordic Spirit went to join his big Sister Ruby who will be bossing him around as we speak.
Nobody ever believed that Nordic was 22 years old, the vet was amazed as was the chiropractor, saddler and anyone else who casually asked 'how old is he?'. We always looked forward to their disbelief! He was treated like an absolute King over the 19 years that Charlotte owned him and went from being a bolshy 3 year old that would have nothing done with him to a super little dressage horse. Despite being an 'elderly' gelding, Nordic was well known for behaving like a young stallion and he has enjoyed his last year particularly as the only gelding on a yard of four mares who he loved to herd, cuddle...... And occasionally mount
Nordic had been on box rest for a little while with mud fever and yesterday while he was turned out for a short period he decided to behave as he usually did (like a five year old) and it is thought that he sadly broke his pelvis. Charlotte was on the yard and saw it happen, she ran to her boy and held him until the vet arrived. He was such a good boy right up until the last and waited quietly.
What makes this even more sad is that Charlotte is possibly the kindest, most genuine, selfless and helpful person you could ever meet and to see her go through this heartbreak is awful. She has taught me so much over the last year and I will always be grateful for letting me watch her routines and methods, I only hope that I can get my girl to 22 and she turns out to be as healthy and happy as Nordic was.
So, please, this evening would you all raise a glass of whatever it is that you are drinking and toast to Nordic Spirit, the youngest looking and most loved horse I knew. He really was such a special boy and his Mummy's heart is breaking.
Rest in Peace Nordic Xxxxxx
