Hi!

I have been told by someone that citronella should not be used for horses with sweet itch as it can aggravate the skin and make the itching worse......I have never heard of this before but does anyone else know if this is true?

She advised she could not use the NAF body sprays with citronella and I do put some citronella into my own fly spray but am just wondering if this is something that I shouldnt do anymore for my horse with sweet itch......

I think it had been banned because some horses can have a reaction to it.
For my boy its the only thing that keeps sweet itch at bay, so I mix my own and he's grand.
If you've already been using it with no ill effects I would say your horse is ok with it.
Also it has made a come back on the shelves, with a 'contains citronella' warning so suppliers must be allowing it effects a minority. And letting the consumer decide.
Hope that helps abit!:)

cool thanks for that!

Also hadnt thought about the tea tree oil......will try that! He has not had any ill affects with using citronella so will continue as I was! :)

I think it must of been tested and licenced for horse use as I saw some fly sprays in robinsons 2 weeks ago with citronella as the active ingredient, I do know it got taken off the market as it had not been tested.

i use a mixture of citronella, neem oil and avons skin so soft on my sweet itch sufferer and it seems to work a treat.

(although he is also on cavalesse supplement, he has the SI injections and he has a tea spoon on marmite in his feed each day... so i dont know which is working, but something is)

My pony had an awful reaction, his neck puffed up and then went all scabby!! But i think it depends how much you use, I went a bit too concentrated and it caused a reaction where it hadnt done in the past....

Personally i dont think you can beat the boet rug.

True Dragon - are these the SI injections following on from the SI trials?

I am also a Boett rug user and have been for the 7 years I have had my horse......he is now back in disguise for the summer as I tell people who query why he is rugged!:)
