I need to buy a new sweet itch / fly rug for my 16hh heavy build cob - after a good year last year of hardly any itching, the "itch" has come back in the past few days with a vengenance..

Equestrian Clearance appeared on my FB page advertising an "Equi theme" rug but have never heard of them - are they any good ??

Have a budget of up to £120.00 - anyone any suggestions before I start the internet search...

Hi, I had the same problem. I bought my boy (also a 16hh maxi cob) the rambo sweet itch hoody, they are about £130 but so worth it!

Equi theme stuff is usually fab, myself and a friend both have a winter coat from their range and it's great (although can in no way be compared to a fly rug!)

Said friend also has a sweet itch rug for her pony which I think (but am not sure) may be an equi-theme. It's good quality but I would think it a bit thick for hot days, and it has to be put over her head, easy enough on a 12.2hh...

Rambo... One of my horses has a Rambo protector- not the one with fly repellant i've had it too long!
Its lasted for ages and still is as new. tbh i didn't realize how good it is until recently i got a masta one which slips and just wont stay in place and 2 derby house ones which were both ripped the first day- even though i have electric fencing and non-rubby horses!
It was the more expensive end of the fly rug range but as your budget is a good one i'd recommend for sure!

I second these, it's pretty indestructable, doesn't rub and is just great!

I've had a few, and imo nothing beats the rambo sweetitch hoody, I bought an aerborn one for my second horse this year as it was a bargain, though it has good coverage and belly cover and lycra insert to stretch and cover the neck, it is nowhere near the quality of the hoody, nor will it ever last as long! So imo the hoody is worth it's money.

I'm using a Rambo hoody on mine at the mo: seems to have lasted very well and stays where its supposed to.

Also I've got an old Pessoa sweet itch hoody which is fab - but they seem to be like hens teeth to get hold of!

Have tried the Pagony - which is supposed to be a cheapy version of the Boett; thumbs down to this one. It wasn't made very well, came apart at the seams easily and I had to get the sewing machine out on it very soon! Plus somehow mine got muddled up in it and the bit that goes to attach the head/neck piece on to the rest of it, somehow got around his hind leg, so after that he wouldn't let anyone near him with it, and as they have to go on OVER the head, that was the end of that experiment!

Have not tried the Boett: though hear they're good. Likewise Snuggy Hoods - are supposed to be the bee's knees but a tad expensive IMO.

Ive got a RSH and i thought they were great rugs but mine keeps bloody slipping over to the left all the time, im sure i didnt have that problem last year, although hes gone to the next size up this year the old one was getting a biy tight.. anyone, elses do that..:-/

thank you for all your suggestions, as the majority suggests am off to have a look at a Rambo s/itch hoody today - would love a boet but if I add up all rug and neck I am looking at £300.00 ish cough cough splutter...

Thanks again for all your replies.

i used the DeMeulenkamp on my sweet itch pony very similar to boet but much cheaper and better design in my opinion, really depends how bad the sweet itch is as to which one i would reccomend. Pony suffers bably and the SIH just wouldnt do the job.
Steer clear of the pagony. material not brilliant and tends to be a weird fit.

I'm and avid fan of the Snuggy Hoods sweet-itch set. Expensive initially but worth it and one would save you money in the long run as I dont buy any fly sprays/creams at all now.

Having one, well two now, has saved me loads of money.

Cant beat it!
