Hello. I have had my pony Sparky for two years now and he suffers with terrible sweet itch. Unfortunately, Sparky was a rescue pony and was previously mistreated. Although he has come to trust me with most things, he is still nervous with regard to creams and sprays. Does anybody know of any creams that do not have a strong smell or of any soap that doesn't smell strong that could help? Alternatively, does anybody know of any other remedies for sweet itch? He already has an excellent fly rug but it isn't enough when the flys are really bad. Thank you

IME Lotions and potions don't work. A good sweet itch rug (like a Boett) that the horse wears whenever the temperature is over 12 degrees works, as does avoiding fields near streams and wet ditches; an open, windy field will reduce their midge exposure.
Other people have had success with Avon skin-so soft on the bits of the horse not covered by the rug.
Avoid garlic in feeds.

Carlanassau, I wrote an article on some very new advances in herbal products recently:

(PM me for more info.)

is it only a fly rug he has? One of our ponies has SI and I got a Rambo sweet itch hoody earlier this year. This along with a permanent face mask has the problem under control but she has to wear them all the time.
I think the only thing that works is benzyl but that does smell pretty awful but goes on as a thick liquid.
I tried loads of lotions and potions last year but the only thing that worked is the Rambo hoody.
