Sorry sweet itch question, one of the most talked about things this time of year and ragwort. ok quick question,
I have a growing 2 year old who has developed a bit of sweet itch last year.

would a waterproof or summer sheet with a neck on do just as good a job as a sweet itch rug?

she only gets it on her tail and neck and i keep her well sprayed with that gold label smelly stuff for sweet itch. and shes going to be wearing a snuggy hood mask.

would this work and has anyone got any recommendations? i don't have much money to spend and I've been looking at the kadence rug if anyone has heard of that?

No, a waterproof or summer sheet with a neck wouldn't do the same job,. You'd save money in the long run buying a decent sweet itch rug - I'd recommend the Rambo ones for milder cases, or the Snuggy Hoods ones for more severe allergies.
S :D

No it won't plus horse will sweat under waterproof. I have used rambo sweet itch hoody for 5yrs now. If it rains keep it on Nd put waterproof on top. I would also get a good fly repellent net-tex are good. It may not always be mild remember. Toffee only gets bottom of mane and dock but she had a v nasty infection once where I wad naive on the disease. Personally never found a supplement working other than garlic and brewers yeast keeping flies away. You will prob find horse v irritable around flies as well. I have found coping with it as a whole routine for march-october rather than deal with it here and there. Also camrosa cream is brilliant for soothing, hair growth and any bites.

Thanks for the replies
Yes that makes sense. I can't use a sheet, so I've got to get a sweet itch rug. I was thinking of getting a Rambo seen as though they have got a good rep. :)

A fly rug should be fine. My boy had medium SI and is kept in a fly rug all year as he HATES SI rugs (have tried boett and snuggy and he takes off/shreds them), but invest in one with a belly bit and also one that you put their ears through. I keep my boy in an HY one and as it is silver it keeps him cool in the summer too as it repells the run.

The Rambo sweet itch hoodies are very very good and hardwearing. You get what you pay for and these stand the test of time. You can also get detachable waterproof linings for them too.

Toffee has a mark Todd one too for when rambo needs washing etc. And she's a tug killer, I find horses sweat under boetts hence why they are prob ripped. EBay ezxema rug (sp). Not sure how good they are.

I use Carr, Day and Martin Killitch (which is a miracle in a bottle IMO) and an amigo mio bug rug.
I have had a severe SI sufferer who refused rugs of any sort, he went from bald, rubbed raw and miserable, to fully maned and tailed and not scratching with Killitch applied daily.
Both my girls are very sensitive to flies, but dont suffer from SI, and they are happy (and cooler) in their amigo's with fly spray daily and killitch once a week.
