OK so I guess I'm not the only one with this problem.

At the moment, the weather is SO blimmin changeable that you're constantly having to change rugs etc., and as mine has got sweet-itch I'm being extra vigiliant. I usually start watching out for sweet-itch/midges around the February schools half-term time, but this crazy winter I've never been able to totally relax TBH - was out Chrissmas day faffing around with sweet-itch rug coz saw midges around.

Soooo....... what I'm having to do, at the mo is this. Coz mine is clipped, he needs a "top" rug on, and I'm having to put his Rambo sweet-itch hoody on UNDERNEATH his turnout rug, which makes the whole flippin thing incredibly complicated, plus heavy, plus hot under there, but you can't turn him out with just his sweet-itch rug on coz the poor lad would freeze!

What I (and no doubt others with a sweet-itchy) need is basically something which will cover the neck/head/poll area (i.e. a hoody), and ditto for the tail as well. Perhaps it could be something that buckles on to an ordinary turnout rug???

I know some people use the Snuggy Hoods turnout hoodies, but TBH after having had an awful experinience with a lycra hoody I'm a bit nervous of anything similar, and even if you use these, you've still got the tail area uncovered.

Soooo.... anyone else with the same dilemma?? Anyone else found a better solution than to bung sweet-itch rug on underneath turnout rug???

Manufacturers/inventors ......... are you listening???

Mine has a lightweight turnout on top when it gets really cold, but would like some leggings for mine in the summer as she gets bitten badly on all four legs and she's the sort that as soon as she sees you with a bottle or tub goes ape*****, and I like being in one piece.:):):)

New bucas buzz rug would be no good as the netting on the sides still lets the midge through that is why proper sweet itch rugs are not mesh

snuggyhood and lightweight sounds like what you need.

lycrahoods,IMO are rubbish, they are nothing like snuggies.
i have 2 snuggies and they are great, just make sure they are the right size and fit snuggly.
i know they seem dear £ but they really last and are worth every penny.

I used to be able to use my boett with a medium weight on top no problem...?

Surely if the horse is getting too hot just use a lighter weight rug?

i would steer clear of the snuggy rugs, i had one for my mare, after the second time finding her standing in the middle of the field with her head down and the 'hood' covering her eyes, she was so frightened she couldn't move :( I now use a rambo hoody, much happier horse, still keeps most of the midges off and she doesnt run the risk of being blinded by the rug, now just need to be able to keep a fly face mask on, she's very good at getting these off ! any help / suggestions greatly received.

just remembered i manage the rain issue with the waterproof under rug from rambo/amigo, its a lightweight sheet that attaches to the underneath of the hoody, works well and doesnt add too much weight/warmth to the rug. she only has this on in place of a lightweight waterproof rug, she manages perfectly well without once it warms up a bit. she also lives out 24/7 during the summer and manages well, i just have two hoody's one in the wash while the others on - works well :)
