I need to get another sweet itch rug. Currently she has a Boett which is definitely doing the job, but is a bit tight and has started to rub on the shoulders. Not a problem really - we were given it and it will do as a spare one whilst the main one is being washed, and I will buy a new one in the correct size for her.

How good are the snuggyhoods ones? I see that they are a bit cheaper than the Boetts, by the time you have added in the face mask (I need to get one of those), and the udder cover looks like a worthwhile addition for me to order as well.

Which one would you choose to buy? I don't want to save £50 by buying the cheaper one (snuggyhoods) only for it to end up being a false economy!

Thank you all

I have a snuggyhood , he used to be out with a horse that loved to chew it so went through one quickly and was always repairing it. I have since bought one on ebay which is lasting well as he is out with another horse . Good fit and no rubbing , easy to wash but make sure you clean out the ear part each day
Here is one at present

The best sweet itch rug from my expreience is a boett rug. They are not cheap but my friend has 2 and her horse's boetts have lasted going on 3-4 years and they are still going strong!

I never got on with either my Boett or my Snuggyhood and have had most success with my Rambo Sweetitch Hoody.

I do happen to have a pre-loved Boett in need of a new home if that is any help - PM me if interested!

Have a look at the DeMeulenkamp sold by Solva Icelandics www.solva-icelandics.co.uk as they're very similar to the Boetts but are a bit cheaper. Mine is coming into it's third summer & is still wearing well.

My horse doesn't suffer with sweet itch (thankfully) but I do work part time in a tack shop and every single person who comes in swears by the rambo sweetitch rug.

The Rambo rug is pointless if the midges bite their belly tnough!

I use cheaper variants of the sweet itch rug - I've never had any problems and found them cooler on the horse than the thicker material of the boett and snuggy. Mine generally do 3 seasons unless he's really annoyed another horse !

I used to have a horse who suffered from sweet itch and it was the bane of my life! I tried all type of things including rugs and the best thing i ever discovered was NEEM... I cant remember who made it but by golly it worked!

It has a curry aroma...

The other thing i did religiously was wash him then give him a double dose of neem.

hope that helps?

I swear by the boetts but the boys at the moment would rip them in a flash - they all have snuggyhoods ones but please be VERY careful if you get one - all 3 lost HUGE chunks of mane and tail because of the rugs (not the flies, the rugs) PM me for more information, I would not recommend the snuggy hoods one to anyone...

I again swear by the rambo rug, I think a lot of people mis-diagnose sweet-itch for simply flys biting and horses rubbing! I find that the rambo rug saved my horses mane last summer thats all I can testify.

my mare has her hoody for 4 years worn 24/7 frrom april to october.
she didnt used to scratch as such but go balistic if any flies where on her and she did used to rub her belly on the ground.
i dont use any fly sprays or anything.
she hasnt had any issues at all.no rubs from rug or flies.the rug is only just looking tatty now so its well worth it!
