Hello, I know all the old sweet itch solutions and past experience has told me that there are lots that help, but only a Boet rug put on early enough in the year will do enough to really help the effected horse.
But...
Has anyone tried the Botanica stuff? There are so many testimonials that rave about it, is it worth a go?
Would be really interested to hear of anybody's experience with it.
Thanks in advance

Hi,

I think its trial and error to work out what things work for your horse,

When I bought my horse he was already pretty scabby & sore. I tried EVERYTHING, I have every cream, lotion and potion going! I even hogged his mane in a bid to make him more comfortable. In the end the vet put him on steroids to control the itching, obviously this is not an ideal situation.

In the end, I bought a rambo sweetitch hoody, I put this on in March, way before any flies make an appearence! He keeps this on 24/7 (sounds mean but its the only way i can keep flies away from him!) I also wash his mane and tail every few days to make sure its clean and not greasy. And bingo, he has managed to grow his mane back and we have no itching! I just put fly spray on his legs and exposed areas.

Again, I've not tried it, but as with everything for sweet itch it's completely different for every horse. I'd be interested to know if anyone has had success with it though, might be one to experiment with this year!!

The only way you will prevent the irritation from midge bites that is sweet itch is to prevent the bite in the first place. The only way you can reliably do that is with a barrier - so a sweetitch rug (fly rug won't cut it) from beginning march to end oct (usually - but your local environment could vary) 24/7 will do the trick. All the lotions/potions/supplements work to put the midge off or deal with the inflamation - none of them will be anywhere near as effective as just avoiding the bites in the first place.

I really like the rambo sweetitch hoody. It isn't cheap, but it does the job v well, doesn't get hot and wears really well - I have had one for 2 seasons now and it is washed weekly as well as rolled in (alot!!) and it is still in good nick.
