Sorry to carry on with my recent obsession with midge allergies, but has anyone been involved with the sweet itch 'vaccine' (reagent) trials over the last few years?
S
yep i have, my pony had it for 3 years running.
Seems to have helped, not a complete cure but it helped. I'm pretty sure that for one year we got a placebo though as he was awful that year.

What did you want to know?

Ohhhh!
I want to know so much....when you say it helped - how did it help?
Did/can you use it with other things such as antihistamines? How quickly did you notice an improvement?
Do you worm your horse normally during treatment?
S
I've always wormed according to intellegent worming system so I wormed specificaly for pin worm before the treatment and then as i normaly do for the rest of the time.
with stan he went from a pony who would be red raw and bleeding within an hour if turned out without his boett between february and november and even with the rug it was a battle to stop him becomming raw, he now after 3 years on the vaccine has got to the point where his boette goes on in april/ may (hasnt been put on yet) and comes off in september however he can be turned out without fighting to keep him from rubbing on everything in site and so far this year i still have a full mane and tail and his boett hasnt been put on yet.
deffinately improved his quality of life. So whilst i fully expect him to start scratching at some point it should be alot less then it was a few years ago.
I have a friend who i met on the first year of the vaccine trial, she traveled her horse down from scotland to wrexham (the first year of the trials it was only available at the center in wrexham, which is handily 30 mins drive from me) as this was the horses last chance. Apparently he was so bad that he was stabled with a boett on and midge nets on the doors all summer and he still ripped his legs apart with his teeth. He was going to be PTS if it didnt work. I had an email from her to let me know that within 2 years on the trials that the horse is now turned out without rugs!
different reactions for every horse but i've not heard anyone say that there was no improvement.
I noticed an improvement in mine in the first year, had a set back in the second year (when i think we got the placebo), 3rd year saw a drastic improvement, then last year no vaccine was available and i managed to get through a season with no raw patches. This year so far no scratching.
However friend above saw drastic results within the first year.
We were not allowed to use other medicines with it unless the scratching got out of control, this was to protect the integrity of the vaccine trials and ensure that any results shown were due to the vaccine and not due to the other medicines.
Thank you, Conniegirl.
I really appreciate the time you have taken to give me such detailed information.
I have just received the vaccine for my 4yr old (she has chronic urticaria to midges rather than standard sweet itch per se) so was very interested to see what your experiences have been.
If you are interested, I will update you on what happens with my lumpy girl after I start giving her the pills (I have to worm her first).
