Have a look at www.sweet-itch.co.uk

Bascially sweet-itch is an allergic reaction to midge bites. The tell tale signs are rubbing (usually on fence posts, stables, field shelters etc). The affected horse/pony usually rubs the base of their tail and their mane. The can rub their manes completely out and afterwards are left with hard, lumpy skin - quite often they rub so much it bleeds. The only thing that works is a Boett blanket. Midges are at their worst at dawn and dusk, so stabling the affected horse at those times also helps.

A 15 year old horse can develop sweetitch. With the wet and warm weather the midges are bad in certain areas. Also, if you have moved the horse to a particularly bad area - e.g. a field next to water where there is no breeze - the horse can easily be affected by midge bites.

I have an Icelandic who suffers from it, a Boett blanket does the trick!

Hope the above helps - good luck.

Chex only got it last year when he was 24

. I think its because I'd moved yards though. With him, his mane was starting to thin, and lots of broken hairs, eventually going quite bald and grazed skin. He would roll and roll, and itch his neck on the trees a lot.

One of my horses has sweet itch this year, i spray her every morning and evening with a spray i got from robinsons. Also shes on a supplement called stop itch. It has helped her out.

She rubbed so much at her bum and mane, her mane got so short and you could see the rub marks on her bum. Also the top of the tail got very thin
