Has anyone managed to sell a horse with sweetitch? Bought a horse with it? Or would you? I have decided to put my girl up for sale, she has done wonders for my confidence the last 3 years (I had a 12 year break( (kids)! I advertised her yesterday. I just feel that i am ready to move on and do more.
So if anyone has sold bought etc, or would it put you off?
When i do sell i will badger you all to see if you know of anything suitable...
Thanks in advance

I bought a mare knowing it had mild sweet itch - though not advertised with it. It was in Sept I looked at her and I wouldn't have noticed accept the gent pointed it out. I also had her vetted and asked my vets opinion - based on the price she was my vet said it looked mild and I wouldn't get another horse like her unless I paif another £5k. Since found out though she was cheap for other reasons.

I do have to say she seems to get worse each year, this is now my 4th year but it is manageable. I guess depends if someone is looking for a horse for confidence and if the SI isn't too bad they'd buy

Many people have offered to buy my horse with sweet itch, but he is rather exceptional. So like everything I think it depends very much on the horse!

Depends on the horse and how bad the sweet itch was. I would want it reflected in the price and I wouldn't want to manage REALLY bad sweet itch.

Depends on the horse and how bad it is. Do you have to declare sweetitch these days? Might be worth checking with your vet about it?

My current horse has sweetitch and it is no issue for me - except for the increased cost in buying bread and marmite for marmite sandwiches for him! Oh and also buying benzyl benzoate. I would much rather buy a horse with sweetitch than one with a vice like crib biting or weaving - its much more managable. It may knock a few hundred pounds off the price, but I don't see it as a big problem.

I bought a horse with very mild sweetitch which i knew about, when vetted the vet said that he didn't have it but without careful management would get it. I think that if I found a horse that was perfect for me and it was mild I would still buy it.

I would buy provided it was right in every other way and was controlable witha fly rug, I wouldn't buy a chronic sufferer.

My two have mild SI - a lot of hairy horses do seem to suffer from it.

For me it is easily managed with a few supplements, rug and spray and they live out from May to October so don't rub themselves much. They have full manes and tails and no marks, gleaming coats, so to look at you would not know they were itchy horses.

If I had a choice of two horses identical in all ways, then yes I would go for the non SI horse, but if only mild SI, and I could keep it out in summer, then I would buy a horse with it.

We have bought two that turned out to have sweet itch, both owners denied it later when we enquired. One has it severely and we would not want to buy another. When I sold my pony, I obviously declared it and it did not seem to put most people off (although who really knows?)
