Hi all you knowledgeable people out there, just wondering when the dreaded scratching will start, I have had my mare since June and she had it when I bought her, I am just wondering when the itchiness will start so I am prepared.
Just out of interest, what lotions and potions do you use to ease the irritation?
Thanksies

Whenever the midges appear, so probably soon given the weather! I think it was about March last year

I'll probably wait until its too warm for rugs then put him sweetitch rug on. I put sudocrem on to soothe it, and the rug to stop them biting.

Got my daughters pony in June and she was really scabby, but she did come from a riding school so it hadn't been managed well. I've got a bug rug for this year and have been feeding "SkratchPlus", for ages. It must work because I ran out and didn't feed it for a week and she started rubbing her mane and tail within days.

Horses can get sweetitch all year round, if they have it badly.
I use benzyl benzoate on my mare - its fantastic in soothing the skin.

Best thing to do is start treating it before the symptoms show

Good Luck!

Imo the only safe way to protect your horse is a Boett rug. You need to think about rugging now as the midges are about and all it takes is one bite for the cycle to begin. As OP said, Benzyl Benzoate will help to dull the itching (remember to wash your hands afterwards

). The Boett will do away with any lotions and potions which will all add up over the year. Hope this helps.

One of our horses gets very bad sweetitch. Tried him with a boet rug and he actually over heated in it so they are no good for him. He is on Global Herbs Scratch plus which is brilliant and has a rif raf fly sheet which is also UV protective. We also put Switch on him which was recommended by the vets but I am going to try the GH flyfree as it is supposed to be brilliant. Vet told me never to put sudocrem on as in the heat it melts and turns to oil and burns them

my old horse got really bad sweetitch i was asking everyone for advice but nothing seemed to make it better then i brought a sweetitch rug and put sudocrem on to soothe it the worst time he got it was around march, april time. it seemed to get better fingers crossed it hasent gone bad like it did 2yrs ago
