Hi, I noticed today that my mares off fore fetlock is swollen and there is heat, although no lameness? I hosed it off and turned her out for a couple of hours, but was even hotter when I got her back in, she has not been in any work after our 'knee incident' in september, so cannot be a ridden injury and I cannot be sure as to how long this swelling as been there as have been doing horses in the dark for the few days before, although my instructor saw her get up from laying down friday night and said she looked lame as she got up, but again it was dark, but was then walking around her stable fine? She is stabled overnight and goes out during the day, her back legs were slightly filled this morning but is pretty standard after being in at night. I am just concerned about this one, fore leg? anyone have experience with this?? Thanks

How long has this been going on for you? I terrify myself when i get on the laptop and read things sometimes, just read that quite often, the less lameness there is, the worse the injury!!
I know the best thing for me to do is probably get the vet, Im just sometimes a bit quick to do this to find nothing major, and then feel silly, and could do without anymore unnecessary expense!
Has the vet been out to see your horse? are you resting it or still turning out? hope yours makes a speedy recovery.

Since Friday I think he's still turned out its just strapped but if it doesn't improve I'll assume its infection and get vet out.

How long has it seemed warm? As it may be infection - sadly I think you should get vets opinion if nothing else it will put your mind at rest.
If he's pulled a muscle resting them can make it worse as it can seize up!

mudfever? My mare had similar, didnt show any signs of it but a lot of swelling and heat. About 4 days later it broke out in open sores and cracked skin. Vet said it was an extreme outbreak of mudfever and prescribed antibiotics.

My TB had similar a few weeks ago, was told to cold hose and box rest but not strap...he was hopping lame but with cold hosing almost sound...took about 3 days to get back to normal in which time he had colicked (hates a change in routine) and vet told me to kick him back out! Cant over state how lame he was at the beginning...I actually thought he had broken his leg...he is such a drama queen

The most helpful thing I can think of is ring the vet in the morning. Sometimes, if my vet has a fair idea of the situation he will give advice over the phone. Maybe yours will do the same...
