Hi everyone. I just wondered if anyone else has experience of bursa on the fetlock. Our boy has been to the vet after we noticed his right fore was swollen. Vet diagnosed thus bursa swelling and said tendons and ligaments seem fine. We have to apply DMSO for the meantime. He was slightly lame on it and we plan to rest him as directed until next week. Has anyone one else had this? If so how did you keep it from affecting him too much in the future? The vet said it will probably always be a weakness 😁

My boy can sometimes be a bit prominent in his bursa on his fetlocks, but has never been lame. When I notice they are prominent I just back off his work a bit, and if they are not normal in a day or two drive him the the beach for a paddle. That has always sorted it in one go.

I think a bit of prominence is understandable, if undesirable, if the ground has been hard or the horse worked perhaps a bit above his fitness level.

With a recovering lame one I was always told to rest for twice as long as they were lame, but I guess "rest" is a relative term, such as light hacking may be still considered "rest" if the horse is up and fit.

If I were unsure I would call the vet who saw him.

I suppose I am probably panicking a bit. He was on hard ground jumping the night before so it's possibly something to do with that. I a, terrible for imagining worse case scenarios

My old horse had a septic bursa in his elbow, he was crazy lame over night (it literally came from nowhere!!) and had to have an operation and a few days in horspital BUT it healed really well and relatively quickly :).
