When I went up to my boy first thing today his face looked really swollen. I then noticed that his right cheek and left check were really swollen and slightly on his neck.

I have taken photos and sent them to my vet but being a Sunday hasn't checked emails. If the lumps have gone down or are still the same tomorrow we are going to call the vet out first thing.

None of my other boys have swellings!!

Does anybody know what this could be????

The same thing happened to my friends horse, she fractured her tooth and a fragment was poking into her cheek causing a lot of pain and inflammation, have a look in his mouth to see if its a tooth problem, if it is very easily sorted!

My previous horse used to have swellings on both sides of her face just where her head met her neck. They would appear only in summer and the vet said they were a reaction to the richer grazing she was on. Never caused her a problem.

She didn't mind when I touched it from the outside but when we put our hand in her mouth to feel any loose teeth she got a bit upset, Once she had this tooth taken out she was fine but a month later it happened again in the morn completly swollen but we checked her in the eve and it was completly gone down.

Interesting, he has never had it before and he isn't on long or rich grass:confused: but it may be a possibility. If it aint gone tomorrow we will get vet out and hopefully he can find the answer. Hopefully we can find the answer out tomorrow as we going on holiday Tuesday!!

Thanks for your reply x

When we first bought my horse, she came in with swellings either side of her face(at the back of the cheekbone and slightly towards her neck). She looked like a hampster !
She still comes in with them sometimes. I took her down to my vet and he recognised them immediately. Apparently it is to do with over-production of saliva and is just swollen saliva glands. He said it is totally harmless and they would disappear if she was kept in for 24 hours +. As I said, she does come in swollen sometimes, but now I know what it is I am not worried. If I need to be sure she will have no swelling (perhaps I am showing next day) I just keep her in. Apparently, it is quite common this year. Hope this helps.

Thanks Amstar that is a great help.. I was so pleased when i went up to night to find that the swelling had gone down lots :) you can still see and feel the swollen areas but no wear near as bad as it was. So hopefully nothing serious but will just wait to see what it like in the morning!! If still swollen vet will be coming to have a look!! x

Kokopelli - No teeth problems so still not sure what swelling is!! x

It could just be a fly bite or something in the straw - I know that weirdly enough one of our friend's chesnuts gets swellings from her straw on her face if she's been lay down?
Or he could be coming out in sympathy for my swollen cheekbone where Kelly kindly headbutted me yesterday! :p
I hope it goes down completely and stays away!

Awww thanks Kelly. Hope your cheek ok :D x

Defo not straw as we don't use straw and we haven't got any round us!!

We got vet out next day and said his glands were very big  he said it wasn't strangles as his glands would be a lot bigger (few) but vet thinks he was bitten by some insect and either got an infection or had an allergic reaction to insect bite. The vet gave him a course of antibiotics and bute and that did the trick :D all swelling went down and has never come back!! x x x

(Sorry this really late, been on holiday) x
