Horse is a mid 20s retired gelding, he lives out 24/7. Noticed this swelling this afternoon, he's absolutely fine in himself, eating, moving around as normal. The swelling is firm but not hard, no heat, and doesn't seem painful. I'm thinking possibly fly reaction?? I'll be getting the vet in, but wondering if anyone has seen something like this? It's on the right side, I have photographed te left for comparison.Left side.JPGRight side.JPG

It looks like a bite to me. I’d be giving it a week and re-assess. Presumably he’s peeing fine? I’d worry more if it were both sides.

Quick update, the vet sedated and thoroughly examined him. All vital signs absolutely normal, no sign of infection or wounds. Her best bet is fly bite reaction. She gave his sheath a good scrub out (something which is impossible when he's awake!) - not too manky, nothing unusual at all. He has bute for a few days and cold hosing the area, but nothing to worry about too much. Glad I called her out though, at least it's put my mind at rest.

Mine had something similar a couple of months ago which I was fairly certain was a reaction to small black fly bites. I found the biteback products repel gel useful around his belly and sheath area. It took about 4 days for the swelling to go down.

Poor guy, this made me cringe! I'm having to do the same to my mares udder at the moment after she's swelled up, she does have an infection.

I'm glad your guy doesn't have anything serious going on!

I was going to say a reaction to fly bites, my gelding has this sometimes in the summer and even runs along his tummy. I use the yellow summer cream all over the area and within a day or two it's back to normal. You can literally smother the whole thing and inside (a bit) with the yellow cream and it works very well at keeping more flies away.
