I went up to the stables tonight to get my Section D in and found he had some swelling between his cheek and where the neck starts. It wasnt there yesterday. When I applied a little pressure to it he didnt like it and tried to get away from me, I checked it with the other side, and its about 4 inches by 3 (ish, i didnt have a ruler lol). He's never had this before, he had an accident about four months ago, he fell in a ditch, broke two teeth and had to have them out, vet said he may get an infection quickly after and be sure to call if he does, but i wouldnt have thought he would get one four months on when wounds have heeled over?

I left it for the night, he ate his dinner properly, seemed to have a good appietite and was eating hay when I left the yard around 4.30PM, also when I got him in from the field he was eating the grass so there is nothing wrong with his eating. I did try and slide a finger into his mouth and up the side of his teeth to see if i could feel anything, but i didnt get that close to the swelling without him worrying (Ive had him 10 years and still can only touch his ears on a good day) so I gave up with that.

If anyone has any ideas of what it could be or if their horses have had it, comments are VERY welcome =) If swelling is still there tomorrow morning I will call vet though and of course keep a close eye out.

Thank you =)

I noticed something like this on my horses cheeks, roughly around the area you describe. I think it may be to do with her nibbling like mad on tiny tufts of grass. Someone on our yard has described it as "grass glands". They go down when shes in and eating her hay so I just put it down to her jaws working very hard on very little grass. If your atall worried though then ring your vet as you say, especially as you say he had an accident previously.

Probably not really but you never know if your horse is favouring one side of the mouth to the other. Personally I would call your vet as they will be able to use a gag (think thats what its called) same as the horse dentist would use to perform a thorough inspection of your horse's mouth.. Better to be safe than sorry.

Ah thank you, i just looked up grass glands and I think Ive got my glands all mixed up lol the swelling is just on his left side, just over the back of the cheek bone, not really near the grass glands. Thank you for your help, will certainly be calling vet tomorrow after all the things i've just read and that have worried me lol!!
