One of the horses on our yard has sprouted a mystery injury - he's an older warmblood (19 I believe and a very fine build almost TB like). He's hardly been doing much, just a bit of light hacking and quiet schooling, but has come up with a swelling on his near fore. It's been there for nearly 2 weeks now and the owner spoke to the vet who said the standard - box rest, bute and cold hosing. Owner is away now but will take the horse to the vet next week if there's still a problem.
none of us can work out what's wrong - to look at, I'd think suspensory ligament as the swelling is mid-cannon bone and sort of behind the tendon, it doesn't feel like the tendon itself. There's no heat at all, it's firm but soft if that makes sense! I.e not fluidy but not solid, more squishy. Also no lameness at all, and it doesn't seem to hurt if you poke and prod it.

any similar experiences? He's not been ridden for a week and a half, had a week on bute which made no difference.

Its could be a number of things!

Best thing is to get a vet to look.

Could be a splint or suspensory ligament issue.
No lameness is good, but i assume thats just a trot up.
Also horse has been on bute which could mask the lameness.
If horse went tearing arround a field or on a hack it could easily cause more damage.

So its best to get it checked, vet could possible scan to see whats going on.

The owner rode him on the road and walk trot canter in the school for a lesson and no lameness during or after. And this was before bute.

My horse went very lame one day when I was competing which was very out of the blue and I noticed a swelling on his pastern when we got back to the lorry. THe vet came out to a lameness work up and look at him, he was sound in walk and trot on a straight line on a hard surface and on the lunge on the soft but lame on a cirlcle on hard. He had scans and they showed damage to the oblique sesamoidian ligament. maybe worth having yours scanned as sounds like it could be similar.

Sorry confused myself, where is the swelling? for some reason I thought you said pastern.... Its nearly friday my eyes are fed up of looking at PC screen
