Swelling on horses head after trauma... How long for swelling to go down?

3 weeks ago my youngster suffered a head wound from the side of a horsebox when trying to load him to move yards. It appeared a small cut but nothing serious. Next day was very obvious, proud flesh type wound, but that has now healed quite nicely. However, it is still very swollen and the eye on that side is a little puffy. I waS just wondering if anyone had any similar experiences and how long it took swelling to go down? Vet has seen him twice and may be back next week to check him if no better, potentially X-rays but obviously want to avoid travelling him if possible. He seems ok in himself, eating and drinking normally and alert. The wound was to the side of the indent above the eye, between eye and ear on left side.
 
A mare at our yard got kicked in the head recently (beginning of March) and broke the skull into her sinus. The hole was left open to drain and to start with was flushed out for several days. I can't remember exact timescales but she was certainly well on the way to being healed within three weeks. We were amazed how quickly she healed as her eye was shut and the side of her face swollen like a ball to start. The eye swelling only took approx a week to go down.

What does the vet think?
 
He was pleased last time he came as wound seemed clean and was starting to heal. There has been discharge but nothing really sinister and that has now stopped, wound almost gone. He has put him on anti-inflammatory over weekend and got to ring him Monday
 
My boy was kicked in the head - came in with two perfect horse shoe shaped on the front of his head and a mega nose bleed! Vet said he was lucky as it's just the spot you PTS horses! Wound healed nicely, but he probably fractured skull (vet said we could go adnd xray but treatment wouldn't be different) - 2.5 years on he still has big lumps on his head - just where the cartilage/ bone has grown over.
 
One of my youngsters bruised the front of his skull as a foal and grew a bump over it - it may be that he has bruised the bone and its basically forming a splint! Depositing bone over the damaged area.
