A couple of weeks ago my horse got a small cut on his fetlock which became swollen and caused slight lameness which cleared up after about a week, which meant we had to cancel a ODE and we just thought it was just unlucky timing.
however brought my horse in on sunday to notice he had a small cut on the outside of his knee with a bit of swelling around it. It had already scabbed over and wasnt causing any pain or lameness and so didnt think much of it and carried on as normal. Had another look this morning and nothing had changed and so turned him out as normal and brought him back in at lunch time. However when i went back up this evening and brought him out the stable it was very noticable the swelling had moved down the outside of his tendon area, and he now had a rather fat leg, decided to trot him up and he was also now slightly lame :(
Both times the cut has been nothing more than a few layers of skin with minimal bleeding and no bigger than a 20p piece.
So can anyone enlighten me what could have caused it to swell this way? And is there anything I should be doing specifically other than hosing it?
Thanks

Is there heat in the swelling?

Was the cut on the joint? Could it have had a deeper point?

I'd call the vet out. It sounds like an infection has got in. It could be swelling from standing in, but I'd rather err on the side of caution.

Swelling down the leg is normal with a cut on the knee and will probably be causing lamenss becuse of the fluid , I would think not much to worry about car on hosing the vet if you call will give some antibiotic in case of infection but you will find it will probably go in a few days

There is no heat in the swelling and the cut was just below the knee joint, i think the swelling was probably because of him standing in, as we turned him out last night and the swelling around the tendon had gone down alot, and was nearly sound when we trotted him up so hopefully on the mend :) will call the vet if it doesnt improve anymore in the next couple of days, but fingers crossed!
