Was hoping to ride my mare today but while grooming I noticed a small lump on the side of her jaw. She did not want me to touch it so obviously sore. She is elderly so I am thinking it could be a rotten tooth or abcess. The vet is coming tomorrow but I was wondering will he just give her antibiotics or will he pull the tooth out. She is tucking into her food and hay so thats not a problem luckily.

That's really kind. He seems to be ok. Because the swelling was on the inside of the jaw, it has distorted the bone &teeth, think it will take a while to go back to normal. Started working him again this weekend, so treading caefuly to make sue there's no soreness left.

My boy got a swelling on the side of his face sort of below his eye but just above where your noseband sits. It was his cheek tooth which had fractured and the roots had become infected. He had to have his tooth out but because he was young, only 4 at the time he ended up having a GA as the tooth broke when he tried to do it under sedation. An old horse came in the same week and had her tooth out no problems at all standing under sedation. Vet told me that in young horses the roots are very long and that it is often difficult to get teeth out but in an older horse its much simpler.
Good luck tomorrow with the vet.
