Hi, i have just been reading the "foods that are bad for dogs" post with interest. I have a 6 month old JRT x Chiuhawa (sp?). He is currently fed tinned puppy food with a mixer. He is very shiney and healthy and had a vet check up yesterday and was declared in perfect health. However, after reading the post Im interested in feeding him raw. Could anyone reccommend a weekly diet for him? as hes still so young im not sure what would be best to feed him? Thanks in advance!

My sisters new GSD pup went straight onto Raw at 7 weeks with no problems and she has Sibes that are 3rd generation raw raised pups, that were happily tucking in from the get go, so I would say at 6mths He would have no problems.

Her puppies were started out on chicken wing tips and the ends of lamb ribs that are cartilage and not hard bone right from when they started solids and the bitch was happily and very naturally throwing up for them too!!

Chicken wings from a supermarket would be ideal as they are usually from younger birds and so the bones are soft. With a small one like that I would hover round the reduced counter, you could easily feed lamb and pork chops, fish, chicken wings and once hes away, chicken legs as well as mince and offal and a small amount of liquidised veg raw eggs and perhaps the odd bit of oxtail as a treat to keep him occupied. You could feed small game birds, quail and partridge and small chickens, choped into sections so it could work well around your own diet.

I have not got a lot of experience with small breeds but I would avoid the beef and big pork and lamb bones and be careful not to overfeed him as he will have a small stomach.

I have always just put mine straight onto raw mainly to get them off commercial food ASAP and because feeding the two diets together can be dangerous.

Basically if you want to conrol weight wings are perfect to add weight add more muscle meat to the diet and you won't go far wrong. When he is older some supermarkets do lamb bone packs for soup and these would be perfect for a small person and they are under £1.

Well done for doing this I am sure he would thank you if he could!!!

PS if you want references Ian Billinshurst's book Give your dog a bone and here is the link to my sisters website
