swollen coronary bands

Checking my old boy today I found that each coronary band was swollen. It looks like abscess but is harder, almost scaly, like irritated skin. The hair next to the hoof is falling off. All 4 feet are the same. Someone suggested that he had been standing in nettles. Any ideas ?

He is 24 and has been retired for 12 years, doesn't move a lot, basically a cripple and just potters about. But Vet assures me he has a good quality of life.

My first port of call from the foot to the fetlock is always the farrier. I cant help you unfortunately, but what does your farrier say?

maybe a little mud rash from the recent rain. I dounbt hes been nettled.
Could as so the periople taking in more moisture and then drying out slightly. You got any pics?

there is a a horrible diease of the bands i dont want to worry you but get vet asap this does sound very simular!
