Swollen Eye?

Silly mare has come in today with a largish cut on her 'eyelid' and the whole thing is swollen so her eye can only open like half a cm max. It is quite painful but can't see any damage.
Thinking that if it doesn't look any better tomorrow we will ring the vets but not sure they'll be able to do anything?
Is it likely the eye could be damaged?
Anything to look out for?
Thanks

My advice would be to always call a vet out asap when damage/ bad irritation has been caused to eyes. You can never be too careful!.....

ithe eye isn't weeping, but the cut is oozing pus. Mum stopped by the vets on the way home and they said bathe it and gave us some antibiotics.Less swollen today so that's gotta be good?
thanks for all the responses.

I'm surprised that the Vet did not come out, especially as its oozzing pus. I rang my vets last friday as Cropi has conjunctivitus (sp??) and asked for some antibiotics, they were not happy about giving them to me without seeing her but did on the conditon that if it had not improved by today I would ring them. You can never be too careful with eyes. Hope it improves quickly for her

But it is just the cut oozing pus? The vet said the cut would get infected. It wasn't our normal vet though . Mum is convinced it will be fine as it looks fine, but I was thinking it might need examined to see if there's any damage? There wouldn't be much a vet could do I would have thought. We've box rested her til its better.

Definately get the vet out. I made the mistake of delaying getting the vet for one of mine who's eyelid swelled up - he ended up with damage to his actual eye and apparently could eventually go blind in the eye...... which they think could have been stopped if Id got them out and put him on anti-inflammatory's.

Now I would always get the vet out for ANY eye injury.

I'd get the vet.

One of mine actually had a 1/2 inch puncture wound in his eyeball, could have been nasty but fortunately he has no lasting damage apart from a little bit of white scarring where the entry to the wound was. He had to have a nerve block in his eyelid so we could open his eye up, then drops to open the pupil so they could check the eye for damage. Anti-inflamatory injections & then drops as well as collegen to fill the hole. He was on box rest for 3 weeks with top door shut so no light could get in.

Mucking out was not fun with just a torch & a boxwalking horse

I'm sure. Personally, I would have got the vet, but parents being reticint so not much I can do. It's open now, the wound is pusing, but the eye itslef looks fine so fingers crossed no damage.
