Hi. My dog has caught her eye on something, and her left eye has swollen under the rim of the skin, badly. It almost looks to be a square when she moves her eye around. It is not bothering her at all and is not noticeable only I was snuggling on her bed with her playing and noticed it. Any suggestions or vet tomorrow morning? She loves the vet silly thing so treats it as a excursion out, shame I have to pay the damn entrance fee as if it is a theme park!

I think I might have taken the dog to an emergency vet to be honest.

The eyeball is such a delicate thing that I would take no risks with it

Do you know she caught her eye or are you just assuming she did because it is swollen? I really don't want to scare monger here but a few years ago my old GSD had a swollen eye one morning, I spoke to the vet on the phone (it ws a Sunday of course) and he said to bring her in then as he didn't like to leave eye injuries. To cut it short it wasn't an injury it was a tumour behind the eye, and the following morning she had to have her eye removed

She did recover well but I am very glad I didn't leave it. I would definitely take your dog to the vet tomorrow morning if the eye is still swollen at all.

Weird but I heard a similar story today about a bitch who's eye is swollen after a suspected stroke and the vets are investigating either a tumour or the actual bleed.

Hoping it is nothing too serious but def worth a vet's visit!

I would definitely take the dog off to the vet. As others have said, eyes are such delicate things. One on mine had one of hers removed after developing glucoma and an ulcer in an eye which already had a cataract, it was hugely swollen.

Hi SO SORRY for delay, I have had no internet aarrgghh how did we cope before? Well I did take her to the vet and she is having eye drops twice a day (every tried putting them in on a strong staff!) and we go back next Wednesday. The vet said he was surprised and impressed I spotted it (you cant see it til she moves her eye to look far right and even then its hidden but obvious if that makes sense). He is stumped, he said it could be irritated from when I thought I scratched but that it could be more sinister. He just doesnt know, he shone the light in and there isnt a lump but thats not the end of it. I will keep you posted after the next visit, Thank you. Oh and yes there was brief talk of eye removal but he said that is extreme and she is obviously not bothered by it, fit and well.

hi. update. back to the vets today. having broken a finger trying to get the eye drops in one morning. back to the vets tomoro to sedate her for further investigation. fingers crossed please everyone.

Keep us posted!

Slightly different situation, but my dog lost her right eye last year after suffering a head collision and developing glaucoma. The eye was not swollen---a little cloudy, but that's all. Did your vet measure the intraocular pressure in the eye?

Don't be too disheartened if your dog requires having its eye removed. I was heartbroken last year when we got the news, but they adapt to uni-vision very quickly.

hi. she has been back in again yesterday (poo / blood samples) and today (sedated again and some very comlpex name thing undertaken which basically means they CUT her eye open today). she amazes me, she STILL runs in full of enthusiasm even tho she comes out knocked out and in pain. The vets still dont know but suspect a parasite. The Royal College of something are now involved, I have asked for a educational discount as they are learning lots! It is getting me and her quite down now - she is snoring happily at the moment tho ut looks quite ghoulish.
