My horse has had heat and swelling in her left hind, just above the fetlock, for the last two days. Walked and trotted her up and she is 100% sound. She is turned out during the day and swelling goes slightly down and heat goes away totally. I bandaged her last night but this didn't seem to help reduce swelling. Could she have just slipped in the field and pulled/strained something? I'm reluctant to put her on Bute as she is sound. Going to try cold hosing tonight see if that helps. Any ideas what it could be or what to do?

The most likely cause at this time of year is a tiny bit of mud fever, it only takes a minute scratch to allow the bacteria in and can be impossible to find a mark on them, just the slight swelling and heat as it heals, I wouldn't panic just keep it clean, dry and monitor for a few days, it may well resolve with little intervention but obviously if she goes lame or it gets worse get the vet to check properly.
