Has anyone else's horses suffered from a swollen head? My Connemara's head came up swollen over Christmas and then he promptly went down with laminitis, he was checked over by the vet who pronounced virus after initially saying strangles was a possibility (no temperature though and bloods showed up virus infection not bacterial). He was box rested and the swelling slowly went down and his head pretty much went back to normal. He came back into work last weekend and after the 1st day his head has swollen back up to the original size. Having spoken to the vet again he has now said allergy to flowers (!!!) and to carry on walking him. I just wondered if anyone has come across this before. I have had to loosen his bridle by 3 holes to make it fit and it is affecting his breathing but vet wants him to carry on walking.

My big mare has a swollen head most of the time. Its one of her mysteries. People have suggested to me cushings, sinus problems, allergies, and dental problems.

Does it affect her breathing at all? It is now affecting his breathing quite badly. He has been Cushings tested (negative) and allergy tested (allergic to grass but been boxed rested since December). I am at a bit of a loss to be honest.

Sorry to hear P is still not right.

Trooper's head swelled when he had infected sinuses but it was at the front by the sinus cavaties so not general head swelling - does that make sense.

I would go along with the vet idea of walking as it will aid drainage. Is cold hosing a possibility or would he freak?

Walking appears to be making it worse but I don't know if it is a case of it gets worse before it gets better, only time will tell I guess. He would totally freak at the hose on his head

No, it doesn't seem to. It's like puffiness in the hollows over her eyes and sometimes around the base of her ears and the centre of her forehead. She's a looney and a walking vet bill anyway so I don't dwell on it too much.

His is swollen both sides of his head and underneath where you would do the noseband up all the way down his head if that makes sense. I wouldn't worry about it either but we don't know what caused the laminitis and it is a slim possibility it is all linked in somehow.
