Hiya,

I realised my mare had a swollen hind fetlock 3 days ago, it was hot and there was a pulse. She also had a very small amount of swelling on the front of her leg (same leg) where she had been kicked. I hosed for 15 mins and the swelling went down. She stayed in her stable for the rest of the day and night.

The yesterday morning it had swelled up again (warm with no pulse) and the back of her leg was also a bit swollen. I hosed and walked her 3 times during the day and the swelling in the leg went completly, and the fetlock swelling went down. She was also stabled all day and night.

This morning I found that both of her fetlocks were swelled up (not as badly as day 2). I took her for a 30min walk on a lead rope then hosed for 15mins. The swelling reduced to 2 points on each fetlock; at the back under the joint, small swelling on inside and outside of joint. I turned her out today but she will be stabled tonight.

She is sound and confertable walking and trotting on a hard surface. She is alert and happy and the her legs don't appear to be causing her any discomfort.

Any ideas what is wrong? I'll call the vet if it isn't better tomorrow. Is has got better over the past 2 days though. She is a 9yr old TB mare. Ex racehorse. We bought her upto fitness after the winter. She has been doing higher intensity exercise and more schooling and jumping recently.

Thank you.

Sounds like wind galls. Horse on our yard has one like it at the moment and vet has said thats what she thinks his is. The ground is very hard at present and if you have been doing a lot of work it could be caused by it. Just remembered that another horse at ours had swollen fetlocks and was a little lame with it. He had bute and rest for about 3 weeks and seems to be ok now. Maybe give your horse a little time off and ring your vet, that may be all it takes, our vets are pretty good to advise over the phone.
