Does anyone know how long a hock will stay swollen for after an arthroscopy operation for OCD. He had the operation about 10 weeks ago, the swelling went down for a couple of weeks but over the last couple of days has come back up again ??? :(

When my mare had the same op she had very little swelling, and nothing at all after a couple of weeks. I'd get your boy checked by your vet if I was you, just to be on the safe side!

I wouldn't surprised about mild-moderate swelling of the joint soon after surgery, but it should settle steadily IME.
As this seems to have gone on for a while and has actually come up again, I'd agree with LucyDT and get the vets to check it...they may even suggest re-xraying. It is likely to be fine, but best be on the safe side;)

my horse had stifle arthroscopy in April. His right hind joint effusion has only really gone away in the last month. The joint was swollen quite significantly before we even did surgery though. His left stifle which was not swollen but does have mild OCD went back to normal within a month or so after surgery.

Mine had OCD surgery in April he still has swollen hocks and prob will always. Depends what they were like before the op? I've got swelling at the front of one and a bog swelling on the side of the other. His stifle isn't too swollen tho, even tho that was the worse area.

Many thanks everyone, have phoned my vet today but he is on holiday until Tuesday which is typical !!! gonna explain what seems to be going on ATM. He has another check up in December with the specialist who performed his operation on his hock so he may suggest waiting until then. Hope it doesnt stay up permanantly as I have brought him to show and he has already missed his first season. If it does though im gonna have to decide a different course of competition for us to take.

Many Thanks:)

It was quite swollen before the surgery he had a bog swelling on the side and a swelling in the front aswell, it seems to be going up and down everyday ATM. Vet is on holiday until Tuesday so gonna speak to him then, got another check up in December with the specialist who performed his operation to see if it has worked. Gonna get him to check his other leg again aswell to make sure he hasnt got it in the other one whilst the insurance is still under a year...
Hope your little ones hocks do go down for you its such a worry :(.....

im glad you asked this question because I need to know the same thing! My horse had an OCD operation on both hocks 4 weeks ago. The left one was causing a problem and had some swelling before but they also operated on the right hock before it became a problem.

The right hock had 2 holes in it and the left had 3 so they had to do more to the left leg. His right hock is still slightly swollen but not as much as the left which is huge! Its not bothering him and hes walking out ok so im just giving it time. People I know who had arthroscopy said their joints took a good 8 weeks to go down. If he couls spend all day walking about then the swelling would go down but he wont heal if he spends all day walking so will just have to wait for him to mend!

My boy had his operation about 10 weeks ago. He only has it in one hock ( touch wood) as the other hock x rayed cleaned. He had 2 weeks of rest after the op and 6 weeks paddock rest, the swelling would go down more when he was left out so my vet suggested I winter him out to aid the recovery. The swelling had practically disappeared for about 2 weeks and now has come back up again it seems to go up and down all the time. He is due to see the specialist in December so I am going to get them to check the other leg at the same time whilst he is up there as I have since been told that it can be bilateral.
I dont really know of any others who have had this operation so this forum is brilliant.
I have spent many hours upset and crying as he was my dream yearling who I brought to show :( and now dont know if he is going to be able to.

Hope it is good news for your horse gonna phone my vet next week when he is back from holiday to see if he wants to see him sooner.

Spoken to my vet today, the specialist is coming down next Saturday so looks like I'm gonna know the outcome sooner rather than later ... Had a few tears earlier silly I know ...just gotta hope it's good news for him ... Will keep you informed...

Many thanx

Hi, just wondering what ever happened your yearling, I hope it all worked out ok. My 3yo is just one week over bilateral stifle surgery and very swollen so it would be great to hear some good results!!
