My 8 month colt had a slightly swollen hock two days ago. Not lame or showing anysigns of discomfort unless you really prod about. My vet seems to think he got kicked and the swelling should go down on it's own (haematoma), but there was no broken skin, missing coat or any outward signs of being kicked. He said to keep him quiet for a few days and see how the hock looks then. Said colt lives out 24/7 with constant acess to stable, adlib hay etc.

Now the swelling has gone right down, it was over the front of the hock and slightly swollen to the outside, today the swelling has reduced but is still a bit fluid like at the front part of the hock.

Now I do trust my vets but you can't help but fear the worst sometimes :o
So! just after a few examples of a time scale for this sort of trauma to go.

Starting to think I should of asked for x-rays but as there is no sign of pain maybe I am jumping the gun.

My 10 month old colt came in with exactly the same problem. He wasnt lame but had a swollen hock to the side and the front... Had strong bute for 10 days but this didnt work so he went for x rays.

They confirmed that he had OCD in his hock and had an operation for it back in September.

Hows yours doing ??? Did you have the x rays done or did the swelling go down ???
