Hi, I have just been to see a horse for loan today and its hock was holding quite a lot of fluid and although not visibly lame when ran up she was uneven to trot when ridden. Owners mum says she knows nothing about it. Any idea what it is likely to be if it is not just a kick?

It could could be a curb- sometimes it causes lameness, sometimes is does not.

Could maybe have banged it in the stable/field or be the start of joint problem.

Might not be anything too significant but I would get a vet to look if you are unsure/ have any doubts.

I would be quite worried, it could be a thoroughpin (not serious) or a bog spavin (more serious). If you like the horse then go to look at it again and take someone experienced with you to look at the leg and decide what the swelling is.
