I posted in New Lounge about this but would welcome some advice.
My chestnut came in with a fat knee last night - I can find a little cut on the front of the cannon bone and I think he might have been kicked. He is weight bearing and not lame at all (have checked very carefully) but I have cold hosed his leg for 20 minutes and stable bandaged him anyway. He is well in himself and eating well, does not appear to be in great discomfort. I do not think there was any heat in the knee but it is puffy and the swelling extends a little down the cannon bone, particularly on the inside side. I gave him two bute last night and called the vet and left a message on the answerphone but she never called me back. This morning he is still looking bright and happy but the knee is still swollen. He has had two more bute this morning as a precaution but absolutely not lame, have trotted him up, and still no heat in the swelling nor is it tender. He doesn't want me to really press on the cut but otherwise he's not obviously in pain.
What do I do now?
Do I call the vet again or try a different one? Or do I hold my nerve and cold hose him and turn him out since he is not lame and let him walk it off a bit? I am *paranoid* about joint infection so any experiences/warnings/reassurance would be very very appreciated!
I get very anxious about the nags when something's wrong - this might seem small to you but I'm so attached to them that it feels devastating when they aren't 100% alright!
