I have a retired showjumper aged 21, who has suddenly got a swollen knee. It starts just above the Knee and goes right down to just under it. All he is now is a happy hacker, 2-3 times a week.He lives out 24x7
I have put WitchHazel on it, followd by dog oil, still swollen after a couple of days.

Can anyone else suggest anything?

Carpal-hygroma? It's like a capped hock but on the knee, but not very common!
My pony's knee was swollen as you described; the top part was odema (it pitted when you pressed it) and around her knee was free fluid. The odema has gone now and she is just left with the fluid.
My vet has said about draining and medicating it, but there is always the risk it will fill up again. I believe she bashed it in the field when she got up (She gets up bum first then the front end!)
We did cold hosing, stable banging and bute and she stayed out the whole time as she cant be stabled.
She was never lame on it, despite it being so swollen, but scared the life out of me because i thought it was a septic joint!!
Good luck with your lad. Hope he is ok. :)

thank you for your reply.

He is on MSM and Glucosamine, so hopefully this will help, but I might put him on Nobute just as a safeguard. The vet is coming out in a month for their injections, so I will ask him then.
