last wednesday i was going to take my pony SJ - had the day off work and got him in early from field. Whilst I was grooming him I noticed he has some dried blood on his hind outside leg mid cannon on further inspection he has a small cut more like a graze and his leg was swollen including his fetlock.
Got experienced YO to look at him trotted him up and he was not lame and as the graze was small and did not need stitching she said monitor him and not call the vet immediately.
Sat morning his leg was still swollen and he was a tiny bit lame so got the emergency vet out. Vet said probably an infection and so antibiotics for 6 days and bute for 3. She said still ride in walk and a bit of trot and to keep him turned out as he needs to move about to help reduce the inflamation and also as he needs to lose weight he needs all the exercise he can get.
The swelling has gone down but not totally, he is still a tiny bit lame (so small that most people would stuggle to notice). The area that is still swollen is mainly round where the cut is. Pony does not mind me massaging or prodding his leg, cleaning the area where the cut is, rubbing the bit that has scabbed over but then he is a very gentle natured pony.
When the vet came she said there was a risk he could have a bone chip or fractured his splint but she could not feel anything but she said the swelling could be consealing it. I am presuming that if he had a fracture that would be painful and he would be more lame?
I am concerned that after 6 days of antibiotics the swelling has not gone away and the cut it not totally healed over - the scab "fell" off yesterday when I was rubbing it after cold hosing his leg and there was a bit of blood underneath so it was not completely healed.
I will call the vet tomorrow but as i work full time it is difficult for me to get a day off work at very short notice so I am hoping the vet can say it can wait until next week to be seen so I can organise time off work.
Does anyone have experience of anything similar do you think the heat this week we have had may have prevented the swelling going down as quickly as it might have done, it has been 27-30C most of this week.
How long does it normally take for antibiotics to work or swelling due to bruising to go down?
