Muppet has a swollen leg today, a back one to make a change from her being lame in front! It was a bit puffy this morning, but seemed to have changed tonight.

It is a bit weird - the swelling starts about half way up her fetlock joint. She has a few tiny scabs in her heel, but they are dry and not sore - I would have thought her pastern would have been swollen if these were causing a problem. The swelling is a bit warm. I can't tell if she is lame - she is lame in front so it is a bit difficult to tell. I was a bit concerned as the swelling seems quite 'localised' and I wondered if it was her tendon sheat. My main concern is that we are supposed to be going to Newmarket on Monday for her front feet to be worked up. If still up in the morning, I was going to call the vet for advice, but in the meantime just wondered if anyone had seen similar?

Thanks!

Hi there I would be inclined to get the vet to look just because the swelling is localised and there is heat. In the meantime cool the leg as the more you do in the early stages (if it is a tendon problem) the better! It is an advantage if you are going to the vets anyway as they will be able to look then. When I had a hindlimb lameness with mine she had a similar swelling on front leg however there wasn't much heat and didn't seem lamer on it turned out to be fairly innocent. However I do think that if the horse has lameness on another leg then they have an increased chance of placing more strain elsewhere. Hope that helps a little. Try not to worry fingers crossed for you :-)
