Swollen leg - will it go down without antibiotics?

Looks like girlie has a cut on her leg that got infected - again!! Leg all swollen, even with her being out 24/7.
will this go down again or does it need antibiotics?
Would prefer not to pay for yet another vets visit, have given her some bute for the moment, do you think she'll be ok on that???

If it were me and my horse had an infected leg I would get it sorted asap which would probably mean going to the vet's and picking up some antibiotics. I would also poultice to draw out infection and bandage and get it as clean as possible. Depending on where the cut is I would either bring in or leave out bandaged until not infected anymore and looking like its healing.

Its never a good idea to mess around when things are infected - I'm sure the horse would prefer to have her leg back to normal!!

Hard to tell without being there and actually seeing - but I would be inclined to call the vet - if the horse is out 24/7 and the movement while she's out hasn't done anything to disperse the swelling, and you also suspect infection - then definitely the vet.

(Yes, more expense, I know!)

Get the vet or it could cost you more money in the long term.

If your horse has an infection it needs treating.
 
Paying for vets visits goes with the territory.....its part of the responsibilty of horse ownership. In the case of an infection you have an obligation to get it treated. Sorry you are just going to have to pay up.

If vets fees are an issue you might like to do what I do.....I pay vets £15 per month by standing order so am always in credit...some of it gets used up for injections/teeth but I adjust the amount if I dont have any other treatment so I dont get too much in credit. Its really reassuring to know that it will cover smaller bills and the excess in the event of larger ones. It also means that the vets dont chase me for outstanding bills (if there are any) because they know they get the cash on a regular basis.
 
just before you all condemn me as a terrible owner who won't get the vet out, let me just say that there is a lot more to this than me not wanting to spend the money...
