i have just recently discovered my mare has a very swollen hind leg, the strange thing is there are no lumps or cuts to suggest she has been kicked by another horse and she is only slighty lame on it. for the past day or two now i have been cold hosing it down however the swelling isnt going down? should i get the vet out now or wait a couple of days to see if it goes down? xx

Call the vet.

Im going throught this at the moment with a front leg and my horse has sprained the fetlock joint capsule ( sound simple but its quite a nasty injury ) she has been on box rest and drugs for 6 weeks and had the joint injected. She has a scan and xrays etc etc.

Dont hang around call your vet out but thus far you are doing the right thing by cold hosing etc.

Good luck.

how old is the horse? my friends horse always has swollen legs and her mare is sound and eventing! (ok, shes 20+) older horses have a tendancy to have swollen legs. if not, then it could be a puncture wound and that cud be infected!
