i have just recently discovered my mare has a very swollen hind leg, the strange thing is there are no lumps or cuts to suggest she has been kicked by another horse and she is only slighty lame on it. for the past day or two now i have been cold hosing it down however the swelling isnt going down? should i get the vet out now or wait a couple of days to see if it goes down? xx

Get the vet out. My filly came in from the field on Sunday night. Had only been out 2 hours cos we had a show. She had a tiny cut the size of your finger nail. Not deep or anything. Washed it and wound powder. Next day her hock was the size of a melon. Got the vet next day and it is infected. This is in the space of two hours. She was weight bearing on it and her usual greedy self. Had injection of antibiotics and bute and same again as powders twice aday. The swelling has gone down already and there should be no lasting damage. Mine wasn't a puncture wound but sometimes you can;t see that time of injury but they cause the most problems cos of the depth of the injury and they hold the infection. For the sake of a vet call out it is worth it even if there is nothing and it puts your mind at rest.
