I've just noticed one of my dogs has one of his eyes practically closed. He was fine when I let him out in the garden about an hour ago and when he came back in. He took himself back into his crate and went to sleep, as he does most mornings, hence not noticing until now. The poor boy!

I have cleaned it as best and as gently as I can. I'm assuming he either bashed it in the garden or has managed to get a bit of muck or grit in it- though I can't see anything. It's not weeping but there's a bit of swelling round the outside and it looks irritated.

I'm always a bit paranoid about eye injuries and always think the worst!

Any advice as how best to tend it would be great.

I'm guessing if it's any worse tomorrow morning, it might be a vet trip!

I do hope it's nothing.

Glad you are going to speak to the vet. I am sure it is probably a knock but you can never be too careful with eyes imo. I don't want to scare you but I noticed one morning that my old GSD had a swollen sore looking eye (on a Sunday, typical) I took her to the vet that morning and long story short 24 hours later she was having surgery to remove the eye, it was a tumour that was causing pressure.:( She made a full recovery but I admit to being paranoid about eyes now.

Agree with the others, get the dog to the vet ASAP. My dog's eye was closed and he was struggling to open it and I had only left him for five minutes. I took him to the vets that day as he didn't seemed right and it turned out he had a corneal ulcer which sounds horribly painful :(
