My horse came in with what looked like an insect bite or a reaction to something he’d brushed against a week ago. It was a lump about the size of a two pound coin on his chin. He was already on Danilone (bute) for lameness so I just upped the dose that night and the following morning. It didn’t get much worse overnight (may be due to his head being up in the stable) but the following day when I brought him in it had spread to the corners of his mouth. I rang the vet and between us we decided to carry on with danilone and to keep an eye on it as he was breathing normally and eating normally etc. I stopped the danilone Saturday as the vet is coming to check him to see if he is sound this Friday so he needs to be free of it and that day it had all gone back to where it was when he first got it i.e. a lump on his chin, not so much swelling so I thought it was going away. Then Sunday it had come back up again and has been pretty much the same since. I’ve got him some Benadryl syrup to give him on vets advice (correct dosage) but I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this? He’s not changed paddocks and I’ve checked for any unusual plants but found nothing. He got bitten on his sheath by an insect last summer and it swelled up massively but it went down again after 5 days, this has been going on longer now. He also started with a runny eye at about the same time which makes me think it might be an allergy of some sort. any help or advice would be much appreciated in advance of the vet coming this Friday.

Some horses can react violently to them.
