One of our horses on the yard has a random swelling on his neck, both sides, in the middle of the neck. Its hot, soft and hot on the actual neck, then on the crest/mane line its hot and hard. Also in the middle of the mane a little bald with a dry patch, but I wouldnt have said he was actually rubbing as if it was itchy as it would be more prominante (sp?!) ?? These are some pictures I took tonight just on my phone but only took one side, the otherside the swelling went furthur down the neck (towards shoulder):
