Just had dentist as my horse was drooling. Teeth were sharpish but dentist said her roof in her mouth was puffy and swollen she said can be an infection? She isnt ill or lame or flat. Anyone else know what this could be? Maybe eaten a hawthorn?

Could it be that her Lampas has dropped?... this is when the ridged roof of the mouth drops below the level of the top front teeth (if that makes sense?)

I have just been told so will look tomorrow. Dont think anyhing has dropped just puffy and soft when its meant to be hard.

If it is the lampas the easiest way i have found to get it to retract is to pick some gorse ( green spiky bush with yellow flowers) and tie it up in the stable.
Its an old farmers tip and works wonders..... you'll be amazed how the horses love to eat it and the spikes encourage the lampas to retract back into place.

May not be that, but if it is then its a good trick and wont cost a vet/dentist visit!

It could be the bit, especially if you use a single jointed bit. As you take a contact the mouthpiece closes on the tongue so horses often open their mouths to avoid the pinching or push the joint into the roof of the mouth. If you use a flash/grakle/drop this adds to the problem because the horse cant open its mouth.

Or the bit could be too fat for the mouth, so it digs into the roof.

Il look into the lampas thing. I use a port mouth Pelham and have never had this before used it for a while now. I don't think the bit touches the top of her mouth where the problem is. I will look tomorrow

Have you ever looked at the roof of her mouth before? She may have had if before and youve not realised. Definately check as the port may be causing the damage. Bear in mind if the port moves under different contacts

I have my dentist quite often and she has never mentioned it before. My horse tends to be happier without a jointed bit straight bars with a port seem to suit her, ~I hope it isnt smashing the top of her mouth :-(
