I have a shirexcob gelding . He gets this problem each summer due to the flies . They congregate around his sheath he kicks at them and bruises his sheath ,which becomes swollen and lumpy. I can usually keep it under control by using summer fly cream ,fly spray etc. If I could stop him kicking himself the problem would be solved.
He is worse this year .The vet has been out he has had a course of antibiotics and bute .I cold hose twice a day apply summer fly cream keep him clean etc. He has access to 2 shelters to get away from the flies. The vet wanted him left out as she thought walking about would help the swelling. I will be calling the vet out again.
I think I need to keep him in during the day . Try a fly rug ,although it won,t cover the effected parts. Probably more bute.
Has anyone got a horse with the same problem?
Has anyone got any ideas on what to do next?
I believe it is a problem with Draught type horses.
