So I brought G in from the field this morning as usual and didn't notice anything particularly unusual until I gave him his feed bucket, then suddenly noticed (with a gasp of horror!) that his lips were doing a Mick Jagger impression......

Both side of his mouth (worse on right), were swollen, from the corner of the mouth running forward by about an inch - bee stung comes to mind! Very comical looking, but obviously I didn't laugh (well, I did after I worked out he was ok.....)

He didn't have any apparent pain and ate his feed normally so I didn't think there was any need to panic. I gave him a bute for anti-inflammatory properties and 'massaged' them a bit to aid blood flow and monitored for the rest of the day.

This evening they look pretty much normal, but the big question is, what caused it?

I would have said bite or sting, but it was on both sides of the mouth and not continous round the front, so I'm guessing something he ate that 'stung' him on the way in? The field has some nettles and thistles at edges, some docks, but they pretty much leave all that alone as the grazing is good. We also have some clover, very, very few field buttercups and bits of sticky bud. Probably some other species I haven't identified, but what do we think might have done the damage? Anyone seen anything like this before?

Hoping we don't get a repeat tomorrow morning! Posted in NL lounge too.
