Hey all,

My poor baby twisted his fetlock while out hacking yestering, we were only walking when it happened, we thought at the time he may have gotta a stone stuck in his frog or something but after a few mins he was okay again. It was like when u twist your own ankle and u cant stand on it for a couple of mins for buts its grand then again! But when i got him home his fetlock and tendon swelled up like a balloon with a little heat in it as well, i put an ice pack on it and cooling gel, i didnt want to hose it cos it was quite late in the evening. This morning before work i hosed him down then for about 10mins. He's walking on it fine and resting on it, and he lay down in his stable last night and got back up fine but the swelling and little heat is still there. What should i do? Will i just keep hosing it a couple of times and day and keep him in his stable, or will i leave him out in the field, he can go on his own he wont go galloping mad or anything like that .... help is greatly appreciated!

Keep him in, keep hosing it and if it doesnt completely go away after 4-5 days then get him checked by a vet. It sounds as though he has just twisted it, though he could have done more damage, either which way a vet wouldn't scan it for about a week anyway. It will do him no harm what so ever to stay in and hose/ice as often as possible and put a stable bandage on over night.

Hi thanks,

the heat has left the feltock n tendon now, i.e. day 2, but its still swollen, going on day 3 now. As the heat is gone i have stopped hosing it and let him out on his own in a paddock, it still doestn seem to be bothering him in the slightest, maybe i should wait til Monday to see what happens that will be day 6 or should i sort something out tomorrow, day 4, i.e. vet?

I would hose twice a day for at least 15mins. It takes 10 mins for the cold to get 'into the leg' everything less than 10mins is just refreshing.

My horse had a swollen leg for about 5 weeks and was on boxrest. Also had her leg scanned but it looks al fine. she was on Bute and Norodine for most of the time. Her leg was still hot after about 10 days and the swelling went up and down on different days.

Definitely get it checked by a vet even though he/she will probably only recommend the above.

Vet. cold hose, bute (its the best anti-inflamitory), bandage, box rest.

Bandaging will help support the leg and help take the swelling down. If you don't know how, ask someone who does to show you.
