So Crazy Mare decided the day before I went on holiday (of course) that she would somehow bash herself in the stable and sustain an injury resulting in swollen tendon sheath just above her knee. She wasn't lame and did not appear to feel any pain on palpation of the area. However, I called out vet immediately not least because I was gong on holiday. He also palpated and did flexion tests on her and again sound and so advised a week of bute, cold hosing and gentle exercise (walking in straight lines on roads) to try and reduce swelling. Left for holiday with thankfully a friend in charge. Reports were after a week no reduction in swelling, but still sound so called vet to come out and he scanned and x rayed with friend supervising. There is apparently a tiny piece of bone which is floating where it shouldn't be but vet has said removing it could cause more damage than help? He has also said it is possible the swelling will never return to normal? He is coming back out tomorrow to reassess but he said to me over the phone that it might just be a case of "cracking on" and bringing her back into full work and seeing whether she goes lame on it or not?
I will obviously grill him in more detail tomorrow but I wondered whether anybody else had had any experience of this? My own (thankfully limited) experience of bone chips has been key hole surgery and horse basically came back better than ever. I know I will be a nervous wreck trying to bring her back to fitness (we low level event) and just waiting for her to go lame..Vet concerned is from a very well respected equine practice which I have used for years (although not this particular one) but it just feel a bit odd and am toying with getting a second opinion. Thoughts welcome please?
