Trust me to lower the tone....sorry....

My Exmoor colt, 18 months old, pitched up the field today looking slightly depressed, and with swollen testicles. I'm calling the vet first thing tomorrow but in the meantime does anyone have any ideas why his landing gear has enlarged? It's been really quite hot here today, would that affect him?

No, weather shouldn't affect him as such.

Has he been bitten or perhaps kicked (particularly if he's been attempting to practice what colts do best!!)

I came across something similar a couple of years ago. The vet that attended said the problem wasnt necessarily the sheath. There was an infection somewhere in the horse body but because the sheath is softer, more pliable and more capable of expanding than anywhere else in a horses body etc etc that that was where the infection had chosen to show itself/come out.

It was very easily cleared up with antibiotics.

Definately get the vet though!

Good luck.

My gelding had a swollen sheath when he had cellulitis in a hind leg. Though, the leg was hugely swollen like a stove pipe....But the sheath is a common place to drain as well, at first we thought it was an abscess from the injections in his rump.
